People who don’t have jobs or aren’t high school graduates have been trained on how to fix smart phones under the National Social Investment Program (NSIP) across the country, says Sadiya Umar Farouq, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development. The Minister said this at the end of the N-Skills Smart Phone Repairs course at the Yaba College of Technology in Lagos.

The Director of Human Resources Management at the Ministry, Rufai Tokunbo, said that the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP) was set up by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2016 with the goal of lifting 100 million people out of poverty in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, which is the country’s capital city.

She said that the program has had a positive effect on the lives of the poor and vulnerable people in Nigeria, including people with disabilities and people who have been forced to flee their homes (Internally Displaced Persons and Returnees).

In the wake of President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval for the restructuring of the NSIP, new processes have been put in place to make the NSIP more effective for the economy and reach more people in the country. A program called N-Skills was created as a result of this. It is made up of a certification and accreditation system for practical training that is done through informal apprenticeships and formal training, such as through Community Skills Development Centers (COSDECs) in many states.

Using certification, the program wants to make it easier for people to get full-time jobs in skilled jobs, start their own businesses, or go to school, so that they can do that more easily. It’s for people who aren’t well-off, like people who have only primary or no formal education.

Following, the Minister said: “NSkills can host many businesses that are based on skills, and the Smart Phone Repairs business is used to test the program under the N-Power non-graduate component. It worked with technical service providers to provide N-Skills training to 6,475 unemployed youth across the country.

The training, which lasted for six weeks, gave the trainees a chance to learn and improve their skills in the business of fixing Smart Phones.
The Minister said that the trainees have learned lifelong skills that will help them become more entrepreneurial in the trade. She told them to be good citizens, learn about the theory of smart phone repairs, and practice basic skills.
The Minister said that the skills learned at the in-centre training were very important, and that they were chosen to look into the job and wealth-creation opportunities in the informal technology sector, which is the fastest growing part of the labor market.
She said that after they finish the training, they will get a certificate of attendance and a starter pack that includes a Rework Soldering Station, a Digital Multimeter, a Set of Precision Screwdrivers, and a Magnifying Lamp. They can then start their own business.
She told them to take advantage of the chance they were given to learn this skill, which is a way to make money and help the local economy grow.
In the past, Mrs. Yetunde Arobieke, the Lagos State Focal Person for NSIP and the State Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, told the Beneficiaries to take the skills they learned seriously so that they can help reduce unemployment and poverty among young people and those who are vulnerable in the country, as well. In what the Commissioner said, we can say “My governor is worried about how many people are out of work in my state. This is why the state government has trained a lot of people on solar, farming, and other things.
She said Smart Phone Repair is a good idea because everyone has a phone. With this program, the young people will be able to make money instead of waiting for a white collar job. A lot of important people were there, like the Lagos State Focal Person (NSIP) and Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment in the State, Mrs. Yetunde Arobieke, the Director of Yabatech Consult Limited, Uduak Inyang Udoh, the Rector of Yabatech, Engr. Obafemi Omomomungbe, and Mr. Rahaman Johnson.
